Treasurer of State, Center for Public Investment Management (CPIM)

Take Advantage of All CPIM has to Offer
By: Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague

Sound fiscal policies are foundational for effective government, and hardworking taxpayers across Ohio deserve nothing less. As financial officials, we’re entrusted with the responsibility of managing and protecting taxpayer dollars. That’s why the mission of the Treasurer’s office is to be trusted stewards of public funds.

Whether you’re a seasoned finance official or just stepping into the role, there’s always something more to learn. When I was treasurer of Findlay, I first encountered the world of public finance. Learning from others was crucial to my success in that role, and I want to make sure my office is a valuable resource for our public officials. After all, Ohio’s overall economic health depends on the fiscal strength of our local governments.
Ohio law requires public finance officials to receive continuing education in the investment and management of public funds.

The Treasurer’s office, through our Center for Public Investment Management (CPIM), provides educational opportunities that satisfy those requirements and cover topics that keep you on top of best practices or important changes in public finance.

These comprehensive offerings include in-person and online courses, as well as CPIM-accredited courses sponsored by professional associations. These courses cover a range of topics including investment, cash management, debt issuance, ethics, tax collection, audits and accounting, and more.
We frequently add and update courses, including three new online courses added for 2019 on electronic banking and cyber security, structuring bond issues, and different roles in bond issues.

We’ve also scheduled four CPIM conferences across the state for 2019, and attendees can choose from two tracks, the CPIM Academy or the CPIM Boot Camp. The CPIM Academy is intended for government finance officers with over two years of experience, while the CPIM Boot Camp is designed for those with less than two years of experience. These day-long events provide six hours of continuing education.
CPIM conferences are scheduled for April 11 at Columbus State Community College, Columbus; May 16 at Owens Community College, Findlay; September 12 at the Sharonville Convention Center, Cincinnati; and October 17 at Corporate College, Cleveland.

Our goal is to make your CPIM experience as simple, efficient, and convenient as possible. You can view training requirements, register for conferences, search for special events with CPIM-accredited courses, browse online offerings, report training hours, and more through the MyCPIM online portal, located at https://ohiotreasurer.gov/cpim.

Thank you for all the work you do for your communities. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s CPIM conferences and other events. Again, please use my office as a resource, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact us at (800) 228-1102.
